UGG Slippers: Tasman, Scuffette and Coquette, Plus How to Spot Fakes

UGG slippers are sheepskin-lined slip-ons made by UGG, a brand owned by Deckers. Its main styles include the Tasman, Scuffette II, Coquette and Disquette. Sizing differs by style, and sheepskin is hand wash only. Genuine new pairs do turn up on eBay, but so do fakes, so check the security label, photos, materials and seller before buying.

What are the main UGG slipper styles?

Four women’s styles cover the main shapes in the range. The details come from product pages at retailer Zappos, which also lists men’s styles such as the Ascot and Scuff and kids’ styles such as the Tazz.

Tasman

The Tasman is a low, closed slip-on that can pass for a shoe. Zappos describes the Tasman II as an evolution of the original that adds the braided UGGbraid collar, with a suede upper, a heat-embossed UGG logo and a sugarcane EVA sole. The closed shape keeps the whole foot covered.

Scuffette II

The Scuffette II is the classic open-back sheepskin scuff. It has a suede upper, a sheepskin lining and insole, and a molded rubber sole rated for indoor and light outdoor use. Zappos lists it as true to size, in women’s sizes 5 to 12.

Coquette

The Coquette is the fluffy one: a mule with a Twinface sheepskin upper and a sheepskin cuff, on a Treadlite by UGG sole. Zappos advises ordering one size down, noting the fit should be snug and the footbed conforms to the foot over time.

Disquette

The Disquette puts a slip-on sheepskin upper on a retro-style platform with an EVA midsole. It runs the other way on sizing: Zappos recommends ordering a size up.

How should UGG slippers fit?

Start with the style’s own note, because UGG’s range does not share one fit. Of the four styles above, one is true to size, one runs large and one runs small, according to Zappos.

Sheepskin linings also matter. A snug fit on day one is normal for thick linings like the Coquette’s, since the footbed conforms with wear. If you are buying a gift, borrow the size from a pair they wear often, and check the seller’s return policy.

How do you clean UGG slippers?

UGG’s care guidance, published on Zappos, is strict:

• Hand wash only. Do not use a washing machine.
• Do not apply cleaner straight onto the sheepskin. Dilute it half and half with water and apply it with a clean, wet sponge.
• Wet the whole slipper when cleaning, so it dries evenly without water lines.
• Rinse in clean, cold water, stuff lightly with paper towels and let it dry naturally and slowly.
• Never dry sheepskin in direct heat or sunlight.

UGG also notes that sheepskin is delicate and not every stain can be removed. For darker colors, Zappos warns that slight dye transfer may occur during the first few wears.

Who makes UGG, and what does “ugg” mean?

UGG was founded in 1978 in Santa Monica, California, by Australian surfer Brian Smith and Doug Jensen. Deckers bought the company in 1995 and still owns it.

The word has two lives. In the U.S. and many other countries, UGG is a Deckers trademark, registered in 1999. In Australia and New Zealand, “ugg boots” is a generic term for sheepskin boots, and other makers there can use it. That is why you may see “Australian ugg boots” from other makers: they are not the UGG brand. In 2019 a U.S. federal court ordered one Sydney maker to pay Deckers damages over boots it sold online to U.S. customers.

For a buyer, the rule is simple. A listing for “UGG slippers” should be the Deckers brand, with its branding and labels. A listing that says “UGG style,” “UGG inspired” or similar is telling you it is not.

How to spot fake UGG slippers when buying resale

Counterfeit UGGs are a long-running problem. In 2015, Deckers said law enforcement had seized over 2.5 million counterfeit UGG products between 2007 and 2015, and that it had taken action against 60,000 counterfeit websites. Its advice then was that the simplest way to be sure is to buy from UGG or its authorized retailers.

Resale can still work. Genuine pairs are resold on eBay too, so a listing is not fake just because it is on a marketplace. The job is to tell genuine pairs apart from fakes. Check these before you buy.

1. The security label and box sticker

Retailer Journeys explains UGG’s security system. Since fall 2012, genuine pairs have a security label behind the sewn-in label of the left shoe, and a matching sticker on the box. Both use “rolling optics”: tilt them and the UGG logo appears to roll over sun logos with a 3D effect. If a shoe has no sewn-in label, the security sticker is on the left shoe’s outsole.

Ask the seller for a clear photo of the label inside the left shoe and of the box sticker. A seller of a genuine new pair should be able to provide both.

2. Materials that match the style

Compare the listing with the style table above. A Tasman should have a suede upper with a heat-embossed logo and a sheepskin lining. A Scuffette II has a rubber sole. A slipper described as “faux fur” or “vegan sheepskin” under a sheepskin style name is a warning sign.

3. The seller’s own photos

Stock photos prove nothing. Look for photos of the actual pair from several angles, the sole, the inside label and the box.

4. A realistic price

A new pair of a current style selling far below what other sellers ask for the same style is a reason to look harder.

5. An established seller

eBay shows each seller’s positive feedback percentage under their username, next to a star that reflects how many ratings they have. A long record of selling footwear is a better sign than a new account with a stack of identical pairs.

What if the pair turns out to be fake?

eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers an item that does not match its listing, and its policy names “strong indicators that the item is counterfeit” as one example. You generally have 30 days from the estimated or actual delivery date, or the seller’s return window if it is longer, to open a request.

eBay’s separate Authenticity Guarantee, where authenticators inspect items before they ship, covers categories such as sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins.
