The best heated blanket depends on where you feel the cold. A heated throw (about 50 by 60 inches) warms one person on the sofa. A full-size electric blanket covers the bed, often with a controller for each side. A heated mattress pad warms from underneath. Always look for automatic shut-off, a safety certification mark and a detachable controller.
What matters when you choose a heated blanket
Four things separate a good heated blanket from a frustrating one:
- The type. Throw, blanket or mattress pad. Each is built for a different spot, covered below.
- Auto shut-off. Timers vary by type. Sunbeam’s run 3 hours on throws and 10 hours on blankets and mattress pads.
- The controller. Number of heat settings, a readable display, a preheat button, and one controller or two.
- Care. A controller that unplugs from the blanket, so the fabric can go in the washer.

Heated throws
A throw is the smallest and most portable option. Berkshire’s heated throw (model HLT1-GJT-F) is a typical example: 50 by 60 inches, rated at 110 watts on 120 volts, with four heat settings and an automatic shut-off 4 hours after it is turned on. Sunbeam’s throws switch off after 3 hours.
Those short timers tell you what a throw is for. It is made for a film or a book, not for sleeping under all night. Take it from room to room, or to a chilly home office.
Full-size electric blankets
An electric blanket lies on top of the bed like any other blanket. The big difference from a throw is the controls. Sharper Image’s dual-remote blanket comes in Full/Queen (84 by 90 inches) and King, with two digital controllers and 10 heat levels on each, an automatic 10-hour shut-off and an ETL certification.
Sunbeam’s manual says each of its dual controls works independently and turns off 10 hours after it is switched on. Its models range from 3 heat settings to 20, and many have a preheat button that warms the bed for 30 minutes before returning to the chosen setting.

Heated mattress pads
A heated mattress pad goes on the mattress and under the fitted sheet. Sharper Image’s dual heated mattress pad is one example: polyester, sold in Full, Queen and King, with dual controllers and 10 settings, and machine washable and dryable. Its Full size measures 74 by 54 inches.
Electrical Safety First calls these under-blankets and says they sit flat on the mattress with elasticated straps. Check the pad’s depth against your mattress before you buy, since pillow tops and deep mattresses vary.
Where a pad cannot go matters as much. Sunbeam’s manual says not to use its heated products on a waterbed, bunk bed, mechanically adjustable bed or a child’s crib or bed, and Electrical Safety First also advises against under-blankets on adjustable beds.

What to look for in the controller
Heat settings. More settings give finer control. Sunbeam’s range shows how much this varies: 5 on OneSet, 10 on Easy Set Pro and SleekSet, 20 on SelectTouch, and 3 on its Prime Style II and Elite Style II models.
Dual controls. For couples who disagree about temperature, two controllers are the main reason to choose a full blanket or pad over a throw. Check the listing: smaller bed sizes usually come with one.
Preheat. Handy on cold nights. Switch it on before bed, and Sunbeam’s version drops back to your normal setting after 30 minutes.
A detachable connector. You need to unplug the controller from the blanket to wash it. Sharper Image notes its controllers detach for washing.
Heated blankets for the always-cold, older relatives and drafty rentals
The always-cold partner. A queen or king blanket or mattress pad with dual controls lets one side run warm while the other stays off.
An older relative. Pick one with automatic shut-off and a large, easy-to-read controller, and read the “who should not use one” list in our heated throw safety guide first. Sunbeam’s list includes people with diabetes and anyone insensitive to heat.
A drafty rental or first apartment. A throw needs no installation, moves between rooms and packs easily when you move out. A thick sherpa or faux fur throw layered over it keeps the heat in.
Someone who prefers no wiring at all. A covered hot water bottle or a weighted blanket are the alternatives. Do not combine them with a heated blanket: Sunbeam says not to use its products with another electrically heated product, and Electrical Safety First advises against pairing an electric blanket with a hot water bottle.
How to wash and store a heated blanket
Unplug it and detach the controller first. Sunbeam’s manual gives the pattern most makers follow:
- Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or hand wash.
- Tumble dry low on a delicate cycle.
- Never use a commercial or laundromat dryer.
- When storing, let it cool, loop it loosely rather than creasing it, and keep heavy items off it. Store it somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Follow your own label where it differs. Some mattress pads, like the Sharper Image pad above, are listed as dryable too.
How to buy a heated blanket safely on eBay
- Buy new. Electrical Safety First advises against secondhand electric blankets because you cannot know their history. The listings on this page are new items only.
- Look for the standard. In the U.S., UL 964 is the safety standard for electrically heated bedding, and its scope covers throws, blankets and mattress pads. Look for a certification mark from a recognized lab (such as UL or ETL) on the label or in the photos.
- Check the brand against recalls. In July 2026 the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Melinora heated blankets after reports of wires melting through the fabric. Search the brand at cpsc.gov before you buy.
- Match the size to the bed. For blankets and pads, read the dimensions and the number of controllers in the listing, not just the size name.
