The best cozy stocking stuffers are small things that need no exact size and get used every cold evening: a sleep mask, a pair of warm socks, a small or flameless candle, and a hot water bottle with a knitted cover. Save slippers and robes for the main present, when you know the size.
This guide is part of our cozy gift ideas. The same picks work for office swaps, Secret Santa and advent boxes, and each one also works on its own as a thank-you for a teacher, a neighbor or a colleague.
A sleep mask
A mask is light, flat and useful all year, and it slips into the toe of a stocking. It helps travelers, light sleepers and anyone who sleeps in daylight. NIOSH’s training for night-shift nurses says a bedroom should be so dark you cannot see your hand in front of your eyes, or you should wear an eye mask.
Silk masks feel soft and match a silk pillowcase. Contoured masks keep pressure off the eyelids. Our guide to cozy gifts for sleep lovers has more on silk.

Warm socks

Socks are the classic stuffer because they are sold by shoe size range rather than an exact size.
Wool suits cold feet in bed. The Woolmark Company says wool can absorb up to 35 percent of its weight in moisture before it feels wet. Fuzzy socks suit lounging on the sofa.
For walking around the house, socks are not enough on their own. The National Institute on Aging says not to walk on stairs or floors in socks, so pair fuzzy socks with slippers for older relatives. Our warm socks guide compares wool, fuzzy and sherpa-lined pairs.

Candles and flameless candles
A small candle makes a room smell like the season, and it fits any stocking. Keep real candles for adults. The U.S. Fire Administration says to keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns and not to use lit candles in bedrooms or sleeping areas.
Flameless candles avoid the open flame, and the USFA notes they “can look, smell and feel like real candles.” In homes with young children, check the battery. CPSC warns that coin batteries “can burn through a child’s throat or esophagus in as little as two hours if swallowed.” Under Reese’s Law, products with these batteries must have a battery compartment that needs a tool or two separate movements to open, plus warning labels. Buy new from a seller who names the brand.

A hot water bottle with a knitted cover
A covered hot water bottle fits a large stocking and gets used every cold night. Buy new, with a readable date marking. The instructions for bottles made to BS 1970:2012 say to fill them no more than two thirds full with hot, not boiling, water and to replace them at least every two years. Our hot water bottle guide explains the date daisy.
Skip this one for anyone with diabetes; warm socks are the safer swap. See cozy gifts for someone who is always cold for why.

| Stuffer | Best for | Size needed? | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep mask | Travelers, light sleepers, night workers | No | Soft, adjustable strap |
| Wool socks | Cold feet in bed | Shoe size range | Fiber content on the label |
| Fuzzy socks | Lounging at home | Shoe size range | Wear slippers to walk |
| Small candle | Adults who like scent | No | Never in bedrooms |
| Flameless candles | Homes with kids, pets or older relatives | No | Secured battery compartment |
| Hot water bottle | People who feel the cold | No | Date marking, not for diabetes |
How to fill a cozy stocking
Put the soft things in first and the small, breakable ones last. Socks and a rolled sleep mask fill the foot, a hot water bottle in its cover sits in the leg, and candles go near the top where they will not be crushed. Leave room for a note with care tips, such as the two-thirds fill rule for the hot water bottle.
Stocking stuffers by person
- Someone who is always cold: wool socks or a covered hot water bottle. See gifts for someone who is always cold.
- A light sleeper: a silk or contoured sleep mask; gifts for sleep lovers has more.
- A host or a new homeowner: a small candle or a set of flameless candles, as in our housewarming gift guide.
- Parents and grandparents: flameless candles and warm bed socks, with slippers as the main gift; see gifts for parents and grandparents.
Stuffers for kids’ stockings
Keep kids’ stockings simple. Socks with rubber grippers are a safe favorite. Skip real candles, and check any flameless candle or remote for a secured battery compartment, since CPSC says coin batteries are a serious hazard for children six and under. Robes and pajamas for children count as sleepwear under CPSC rules, so they belong in the main gift, bought new from a named brand. For a young fan, our guide to cozy gifts for fans covers licensed character socks and slippers.
When a stuffer should be the main gift instead
Slippers, robes and loungewear need a real size, and sizing can differ between styles from one brand. Our UGG slippers guide, for example, lists which styles run large or small. Save those for when you know the size, or include a gift receipt.
Frequently asked questions
What are good cozy stocking stuffers for adults?
A silk or contoured sleep mask, a pair of wool or fuzzy socks, a small candle or a set of flameless candles, and a hot water bottle with a knitted cover. None of them needs an exact size.
Are flameless candles safe in a child's stocking?
Check the battery first. Some flameless candles and their remotes use coin batteries, and CPSC warns these can burn through a child's throat in as little as two hours if swallowed. Products must now have secured battery compartments and warnings.
Are socks a good stocking stuffer?
Yes, they are the classic one. Socks are sold by shoe size range, so they are forgiving. Merino wool socks suit cold feet in bed; fuzzy socks with grippers suit lounging at home.
